Money Smart - Have Your Say

I get so sick of hearing about superannuation. I know it's important but it's all anyone my parents age or older ever talks about. I wish they wouldn’t be so depressing about money all the time. It makes money seem like a bad thing.

I heard that if all the money in the world was spread around properly everyone would be a millionaire, even all the people in China and India. I know that would stuff up the economy and all that, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

I try not to waste money but I know I do. Things like computer games are a complete waste of money but they are fun and all my friends play them too. I would be much better saving for a Playstation 3 so I could play at home for free. It’s a hard decision to make though.

I started getting pocket money when I was four. I didn’t get much, about one dollar a week, but if I saved for two weeks I could get a matchbox car. It taught me about saving up and waiting for something that you want.

Your credit score is like your teeth: you only get one chance to take care of it, and make sure not to be too irresponsible. I read that you should divide your money into four parts – saving, spending, giving and wealthing. Save some, spend some, give some away to someone who needs it and use some to invest or start a business or something that will keep earning you money.

I think kids should have to work for most of their money. My parents give me money for things like lunch or clothes but if I want something for myself I have to use my own money. I’d love them to give me stuff but I know that earning it is what real life is like.

If your parents are requiring you to pitch in for your high school prom expenses, there are some great ways to save money. These include things like taking a disposable camera to the prom, rather than taking expensive pictures there. See more at the link.

There was a guy at our school who started this business selling really cool t-shirts he printed himself. He just sold them at school first and then a shop bought some and now he is about twenty and has his own warehouse. It shows you anyone with a good idea can make money.

There are really easy ways to save money. You can bring your lunch from home and you can not buy junk food after school. I think that is where most kids spend money. And on games, if you play games at home instead of at the mall, you can save heaps.
